LIGHTED
Advertising, marketing, and design are tools used to sell products and ideas—most of which we do not need. The disposable nature of these goods is an outrage to our planet’s health and a risk to our existence, if we maintain our consumption and production levels.
This saturated market has spawned sophisticated techniques to manipulate desire: slogans that echo in our heads, subliminal messages, and images of a utopian happiness we are urged to crave. Even lighting is used to overpower critical thought, dazzling us into submission like a cat captivated by blinking patterns.
Yet, these very techniques hold artistic potential. By incorporating programmed lighting, the Big Trash Animals series upgrades its impact. The work becomes a sheep in wolves' clothing, using the language of advertising not to sell anything, but to amplify its critique of consumerism and give its message contrast in a flashy urban landscape.
